Union Square



Union Square is located at the intersection of Cambridge St, North Beacon St and Brighton Ave.  Click on these links for more photos and history of this area.

The Greene Druggist building on the right is now the location of Twin Donuts.  The taller building behind it is the Odd Fellows Hall. (Courtesy of Joel Shield)



To the right of center is the Hanoville World War I Memorial which was later moved to the front of the fire station on the other side of Union Square.  c1940

Dan's Market at 1 North Beacon St in Union Sq.  The boy on the left is Garnett Long 



Dan's Market was located at the above Drug Store or First National Store location.  Note that the Model Cafe to the left of center is still operating today




Brighton Avenue Baptist Church in1907 at the intersection of Cambridge St and Brighton Ave. It's located at the number 29 on the 1885 map above.  The church society was formed In 1853 and the original church was dedicated two years later.  The original church was smaller and was later enlarged. It was destroyed by fire in 1928 and a new church built at the corner of Cambridge and Gordon St

1914 The original tall church spire was replaced by this smaller domed spire after being damaged by a lightning strike  (John Murdoch)



1945 The church was replaced by this Mobil gas station.  The fire station is located here today



Union Square c1960




502 Cambridge St at Union Sq in 1906.  Today it is the site of the Jackson Mann school
